Salem’s Most Common Pests

Carpenter Ants
Carpenter ants are the most common pest complaint in the Willamette Valley — and one of the most misunderstood. Unlike termites, they don’t eat wood, but they tunnel through it to nest, causing structural damage over time. Salem’s wet climate makes moisture-damaged wood plentiful, which is exactly what carpenter ants look for. If you’re seeing large black ants indoors in spring or summer, don’t wait.

Salem’s mild, wet climate is beautiful — and it’s also why pest pressure here is higher than many parts of the country. When it comes to Salem Pest Control – here are the pests we treat most frequently in Salem homes and businesses:

Odorous House Ants
These small brown ants get their name from the distinctive smell they produce when crushed — a bit like rotten coconut. They’re extremely common in Salem kitchens and bathrooms, especially after rain drives them indoors. Odorous house ants form massive colonies and can be notoriously difficult to eliminate with over-the-counter products alone.

Rodents
Rats and mice are a persistent issue in Salem, particularly in neighborhoods near the Willamette River, wooded areas, and older residential streets. Fall is when we see the biggest surge in rodent calls, as the cooling temperatures push them to seek warmth indoors. Our rodent control services combine trapping, exclusion, and habitat modification to address the problem at the source — not just what’s visible. If you have any evidence of rodent activity, we recommend adding this coverage to your Salem pest control service.

Spiders
Salem is home to several spider species, including the giant house spider, hobo spider, and yellow sac spider. Most spiders in the area are harmless, but their presence indoors is often a sign of other pest activity they’re feeding on. We treat for spiders as part of our All Seasons quarterly program, which keeps populations under control year-round.

Yellow Jackets & Wasps
Stinging insects peak in late summer across the Salem area. Yellow jackets in particular become aggressive as their food sources diminish in August and September, and they frequently build nests in eaves, wall voids, and underground. Our technicians are trained to locate and treat nests safely.

Termites & WDO Inspections
While Salem doesn’t face the same termite pressure as warmer climates, we do see subterranean termite activity — particularly in older homes with wood-to-soil contact in basements and crawl spaces. We also provide Wood Destroying Organism (WDO) inspections for real estate transactions throughout the Salem area.

Not sure what you’re dealing with?

Most Salem homeowners get a same-week inspection. We’ll tell you exactly what’s there — and what it’ll take to fix it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Salem’s Willamette Valley location creates ideal conditions for carpenter ants, odorous house ants, spiders, and rodents. Stinging insects (yellow jackets, wasps, hornets) are prevalent in late summer. Termite activity is less common than in warmer climates, but does occur — particularly subterranean termites in older homes with crawl spaces.

A one-time treatment varies depending on the pest and property size. Most Salem homeowners find the best value in our All Seasons Quarterly Plan, which starts at $39 per month and includes four scheduled visits plus as many extra visits between these appointments as needed. We always provide a free inspection and quote before any work begins — no surprises.

Yes. We follow Integrated Pest Management (IPM) protocols, which prioritize prevention and use the least-toxic effective treatments available. All products we use are applied by licensed technicians and are safe for your family and pets when dry. We’ll walk you through any precautions before and after treatment.

We typically schedule within 1–3 business days for new customers. For urgent situations — active wasp nests, rodent infestations, bed bug concerns — we do our best to accommodate same-day or next-day service. Call us at (503) 461-0259 for availability.

For exterior-only treatments, you don’t need to be home. For interior treatments, we do require an adult to be present. We’ll confirm all of this when you book your appointment.

A one-time treatment addresses the current infestation. A quarterly plan (our All Seasons service) prevents new ones from developing by treating your home at four key points in the pest cycle. Most customers find that after the first full year on the quarterly plan, pest activity drops dramatically — and stays low.
