Signs of a wasp or yellow jacket nest

A few wasps around the garbage can in August is normal. Wasps coming and going from the same spot all day means a nest.

A busy hole in the lawn

A steady line of yellow jackets in and out of one hole in the grass, a flower bed or a rotting stump.

Paper nests

Open, papery nests under eaves, decks and play structures are usually paper wasps.

Traffic in one spot

Wasps flying in and out of the same gap in siding, soffits or a vent.

Slow wasps in spring

Slow wasps on spring window sills are usually queens coming out of winter shelter.

Why yellow jackets get worse as summer ends

The PNW Insect Management Handbook says a yellow jacket colony starts with a single queen in spring, grows all summer, and is most troublesome and dangerous in August and September. OSU Extension says a colony can reach up to 5,000 workers at its peak, and that yellow jackets often nest in the ground and can sting without much warning in fall as the colony dies off.

In Interstate Pest Management records for new Oregon customers over the last five years, July and August brought 47% of the year’s new wasp and yellow jacket calls. In iNaturalist records for Marion and Polk counties over the same years, 28% of yellow jacket sightings came in September. Call when you first see the traffic, and the nest is smaller and easier to deal with.

How we handle wasps in Salem

  1. 1

    Find the nest

Your technician follows the flight path to the nest, whether it is in the eaves, the ground, a stump or a wall void.

  2. 2

    Treat the nest

In protective gear, your technician treats the nest, removes it when it can be reached, and treats the eaves and corners where queens like to start new ones.

  3. 3

    Check through the season

Each visit from spring to fall includes a look for new nests. If one shows up between visits, re-service is included in your plan.

What waiting costs

  • A queen that starts a nest in spring has a full colony by late summer.
  • The PNW Insect Management Handbook says colonies get more aggressive as summer turns to fall.
  • A nest in a wall void can grow until the wasps find a way into the room.

When wasps send Oregon homeowners to the phone

Our records show the month each new Oregon customer first called us about wasps. Salem is our newest office, so these five years of records come mostly from the Portland area up the valley, on the same Willamette Valley seasons. Your plan visits are set ahead of those months, so wasps find a treated house when they arrive.

Salem wasps questions

Still deciding? Our Salem office answers the phone Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm.

How much does wasp control cost in Salem?

Wasps and yellow jackets are covered by the All Seasons Pest Service at $39/mo with a $260 one-time setup fee. Have just one nest? Call and we will walk through the options.

When is wasp season in Salem?

Nests start in spring and are biggest in late summer. In Interstate Pest Management records for new Oregon customers over the last five years, new wasp and yellow jacket calls peaked in July and August, and 64% arrived July through September.

Should I remove a nest myself?

We advise against it. Yellow jackets defend their nest, and nests in the ground or inside a wall are bigger than they look from outside. Our technicians treat nests with protective gear.

Why are wasps so aggressive in the fall?

The PNW Insect Management Handbook says yellow jackets get more aggressive as summer turns to fall, and OSU Extension notes they can sting without provocation as the colony dies off. Fall is a bad time to bump a nest.

Do you treat honey bees?

Text or email us a photo first. Honey bee colonies should not be destroyed, and a local beekeeper can often move a colony that is out in the open.

What if a new nest shows up between visits?

Call and we come back. Re-service between scheduled visits is included on every All Seasons plan.
