Signs of a spider problem in a Salem home
A spider now and then is part of living in the valley. These signs mean it’s time for treatment.
Webs back by morning
Webs across eaves, windows and the porch light a day or two after you knocked them down.
Spiders in the tub or sink
Big brown spiders in bathtubs and sinks in late summer are usually wandering males.
Egg sacs in the garage
White or tan silk sacs tucked into garage corners, shelving, window tracks and deck railings.
Small pale spiders on the ceiling
Yellow sac spiders hide in silk sacs where the wall meets the ceiling in cooler weather.
Why September is spider month in Salem
The Oregon Department of Agriculture says giant house spiders and hobo spiders were introduced from Europe, that neither species is considered harmful, and that males are usually seen in late summer and fall while they search for females. In iNaturalist records for Marion and Polk counties over the last five years, 50% of giant house spider sightings came in August and September.
Interstate Pest Management records for new Oregon customers over the same years show the same timing: September brought 17% of the year’s new spider calls, more than any other month, and 56% arrived July through October. ODA adds that yellow sac spiders move indoors in cooler weather, and that reports of lasting skin damage from their bites are rarely confirmed.

How we handle spiders in Salem
- 1
Inspect
Your technician checks eaves, windows, garages, crawl spaces and the outside walls where spiders build and hide.
- 2
Brush down and treat
We take down webs and egg sacs with a long brush, then treat the eaves, window frames and foundation where spiders hide and their insect food gathers. We point out the porch lights and stored clutter that bring them close.
- 3
Stay ahead of late summer
Scheduled visits keep the exterior treated before the September peak. Re-service between visits is included in your plan.

What waiting costs
- Knocking webs down by hand buys a day or two before they are back.
- One egg sac in the garage is next year’s spiders.
- The wave of wandering males comes back every late summer.

When spiders send Oregon homeowners to the phone
Our records show the month each new Oregon customer first called us about spiders. Salem is our newest office, so these five years of records come mostly from the Portland area up the valley, on the same Willamette Valley seasons. Your plan visits are set ahead of those months, so spiders find a treated house when they arrive.

What our customers say about spiders
4.96 average from 8,394 Google reviews
“I want to specifically shout out to Charlie today. He walked through the house with me to identify areas that needed to be treated for spiders. Often he is only able to do the outside because we are away from the house so there was a lot to do. He is thorough, personable and everything I admire about Interstate Pest Control and then some! Great job!!”
“The technician is professional and pleasant to work with.”
“Our tech is always so informative and helpful”
