Why Portland sees so many spiders

The Oregon Department of Agriculture says most hobo spider and giant house spider sightings happen in late summer and early fall, when males leave their shelters to look for mates. Over the last 5 years, September brought Interstate Pest Management more new spider calls than any other month.

Most Portland spiders are harmless, but one on the pillow still makes you jump. Spiders follow their food, so treating the spots where they hide and the insects that draw them in works better than spraying one spider at a time.

Are Portland spiders dangerous?

Most spiders in Portland homes are harmless to people. Females are shiny black with a red hourglass under the abdomen. If you see one, keep your distance and call us.
