Why September is spider month around Olympia
In Interstate Pest Management records for new customers in Thurston, Lewis and Mason counties over the last five years, September brought 28% of the year’s new spider calls, more than any other month, and 72% came June through September. iNaturalist records for Thurston and Lewis counties over the same years put 82% of cross orbweaver sightings in August through October.
WSU says giant house spiders are common in homes west of the Cascades, are seen most from mid-summer to early fall when males are on the move, and are not known to pose a threat to people. WSU also says the hobo spider was improperly identified as a dangerous spider, and that firewood brought inside can carry spiders with it.
