Signs of a wasp or yellow jacket nest

A few wasps at the barbecue in August is normal. Wasps flying in and out of one spot all day means a nest.

A busy hole in the ground

A steady stream of yellow jackets in and out of one hole in the lawn, a bark bed or an old stump.

Paper combs under the eaves

Small open combs under eaves, railings and play sets are usually paper wasps.

Buzzing in a wall

WSU says yellow jackets often nest in wall voids and attics and can chew through into a room.

A gray ball in a tree or shrub

Bald-faced hornet nests can reach basketball size by late summer.

Why July is wasp month around Olympia

In Interstate Pest Management records for new customers in Thurston, Lewis and Mason counties over the last five years, July brought 28% of the year’s new wasp and yellow jacket calls and July and August together brought 50%. iNaturalist records for Thurston and Lewis counties peak a month later: August held 35% of the year’s yellow jacket sightings. People call when the traffic starts and log the wasps when they are everywhere.

The PNW Insect Management Handbook says a nest starts with one queen in spring, can hold thousands of workers by late summer, and is most troublesome in August and September. WSU says yellow jackets are particularly aggressive in late summer or fall, and Thurston County’s wasp fact sheet suggests checking the eaves in early summer, while nests are still small.

How we handle wasps in Olympia

  1. 1

    Find the nest

Your technician follows the flight path to the nest, whether it is under the eaves, in the ground, in a stump or inside a wall.

  2. 2

    Treat the nest

In protective gear, your technician treats the nest, removes it when it can be reached and treats the eaves and corners where queens like to start new ones.

  3. 3

    Check through the dry months

Each visit from spring to fall includes a look for new nests. If one shows up between visits, re-service is included in your plan.

Olympia wasps questions

Still deciding? Our Olympia office answers the phone Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm.

How much does wasp control cost in Olympia?

Wasps and yellow jackets are covered by the All Seasons Pest Service at $39/mo with a $260 one-time setup fee. Have just one nest? Call and we will walk through the options.

When is wasp season in Olympia?

April through September, with July the busiest. In Interstate Pest Management records for new customers in Thurston, Lewis and Mason counties over the last five years, July and August brought 50% of new wasp and yellow jacket calls.

Should I remove a nest myself?

We advise against it, and Thurston County recommends a professional for underground nests and nests near an attic or crawl space. Yellow jackets defend the nest, and the part you can see is often the small part.

Was that a murder hornet?

Almost certainly not. WSDA declared the northern giant hornet eradicated from Washington at the end of 2024, and it was only ever found in Whatcom County. Big wasps around Olympia are usually yellow jackets or bald-faced hornets. If you think you’ve seen an invasive hornet, WSDA takes reports at 1-800-443-6684.

Do you treat honey bees?

Text or email us a photo first. Honey bee colonies should not be destroyed, and a local beekeeper can often move a colony that is out in the open.

What if a new nest shows up between visits?

Call and we come back. Re-service between scheduled visits is included on every All Seasons plan.
