A lake the mountain made
Washington State Parks says Silver Lake formed about 2,500 years ago, when lahars from Mount St. Helens dammed Outlet Creek, and that Seaquest State Park on the lake came to the state from Alfred Seaquest, who left the family homestead for park use. The Mount St. Helens Visitor Center at the park opened in December 1986.
In Interstate Pest Management records for new customers with Silverlake billing addresses over the last five years, ants were on 48% of first visits and wasps and yellow jackets on 32%, about three times the 10% wasp share across our whole Kelso service area. Carpenter ants were on 13%, compared with 5% service-area wide.
When to expect it

A lake place that sits closed for part of the year gives yellow jackets and carpenter ants time to settle in. For a plant or insect question, the WSU Cowlitz County Extension Plant & Insect Clinic is at 304 Cowlitz Way in Kelso, (360) 577-3014.
