Signs of an ant problem in an Olympia home

A stray ant in summer is normal. These signs mean a colony has moved in or close by.

Afternoon trails

WSU says odorous house ant trails are easiest to see after noon, running from a gap to food or water.

Ants in the sweets

Small dark ants in the sugar, juice, pastries or the pet bowl, and back again after you wipe them up.

Swarms in spring

Large winged ants indoors from April to early June can mean a carpenter ant nest nearby.

Wood shavings

Coarse sawdust under a window frame, a deck board or a beauty bark bed by the foundation.

Why ant calls run from March to August

In Interstate Pest Management records for new customers in Thurston, Lewis and Mason counties over the last five years, ants were on 37% of first visits, and 83% of the year’s new ant calls came March through August. Calls drop off fast once the October rain is back. WSU calls odorous house ants perhaps the most difficult ants in our area to discourage, because their shallow nests move often.

Carpenter ants are the other big one. WSU says their mating swarms generally occur from April to early June, that the main nest is usually outdoors in a stump or log, and that many home infestations are satellite nests. In iNaturalist records for Thurston and Lewis counties over the last five years, 61% of carpenter ant sightings came in May and June.

How we handle ants in Olympia

  1. 1

    Identify the ant

Your technician follows the trail, checks nesting spots by the foundation and looks for moisture to confirm which ant you have.

  2. 2

Treat the nest, not the trail

We place baits the workers carry home so the treatment reaches the nest you can’t see. For carpenter ants we look for the parent nest outdoors and the wet wood they are using, and show you what to fix.

  3. 3

    Stay ahead of spring

Your scheduled visits land before the March ant surge. If a trail shows up between visits, re-service is included in your plan.

What waiting costs

  • A trail that finds food once comes back to it every warm afternoon.
  • Carpenter ant satellite nests keep growing as long as the parent nest outdoors is there.
  • Wet wood that drew carpenter ants in keeps getting softer.

What it looks like when ants are handled

A clean counter through a sunny week, a dishwasher without ants and a spring you don’t spend chasing trails.

Olympia ants questions

Still deciding? Our Olympia office answers the phone Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm.

How much does ant control cost in Olympia?

Ants are covered by the All Seasons Pest Service at $39/mo with a $260 one-time setup fee. If you also need rats and mice covered, the All Seasons Pest & Rodent Service is $47/mo with a $280 setup fee.

When is ant season in Olympia?

March through August. In Interstate Pest Management records for new customers in Thurston, Lewis and Mason counties over the last five years, 83% of new ant calls came in those six months.

What are the tiny ants in my kitchen?

Most small dark ants in Olympia kitchens turn out to be odorous house ants. WSU puts the workers at about 1/16 inch. They like sweets, dairy and juice, and smell like rotten coconut when crushed.

How do I know if I have carpenter ants?

Look for large black or red-and-black ants indoors, winged ants from April to early June, and coarse sawdust near wood. We confirm the species before treating.

Why do ants keep coming back after I spray?

Spray only reaches the ants you can see, and the nest keeps sending more. Baits the workers carry home reach the nest. If ants come back between scheduled visits, re-service is included in your plan.

Is treatment okay with kids and pets at home?

We use an Integrated Pest Management approach: baits and targeted treatments instead of blanket spraying, the same inspection-first approach Thurston County uses for its own properties. Your technician tells you where each treatment went and when kids and pets can be back in that area.
