Local Context: Tumwater, Washington

Where the Deschutes meets the Sound

Tumwater is one of the oldest towns in the state. A 1995 Washington Senate resolution honoring the city’s 150th anniversary says the Simmons party came in 1845 to establish the first permanent American settlement north of the Columbia River. A historic structures report on the Olympia Brewery says the Schmidt family brewed at the Lower Falls of the Deschutes River from 1896.

The Department of Ecology says the Deschutes once ran straight into Budd Inlet, until a 1951 dam created Capitol Lake. Today the river, the falls and the wooded slopes along it run right through town. NOAA’s climate normals for nearby Olympia Airport show July and August as the driest months of the year, and that dry stretch is yellow jacket season.

When to expect it

Wasps and yellow jackets are the summer call. In Interstate Pest Management records for new customers in Thurston, Lewis and Mason counties over the last five years, July and August brought 50% of the year’s new wasp and yellow jacket calls. The PNW Insect Management Handbook says nests are most troublesome in August and September.

Share of new first-time calls by month. Source: Interstate Pest Management service records, first appointments of new customers with Thurston, Lewis and Mason County billing addresses over the last five years. Each row sums to about 100%.

Thurston County’s wasp fact sheet suggests checking the eaves in early summer, while nests are small, and calling a professional for nests in the ground or near an attic or crawl space. Mark the spot, keep kids and pets away and give us a call.

  2. 2

  3. 3

July and August. In Interstate Pest Management records for new customers in Thurston, Lewis and Mason counties over the last five years, those two months brought 50% of new wasp and yellow jacket calls.
