Yellow jackets on rural La Center property
WSU Extension says yellowjacket queens overwinter and start new colonies each spring, and that yellowjackets are most aggressive in late summer and fall. Ground nests in pasture, under stumps and along fence lines are easy to mow over without seeing them.
WSU also says ground nesters often build in wall voids or attics. On a rural property, check sheds, shops and the eaves of outbuildings as well as the house.
If you find a nest, mark it and keep people, pets and mowers away. Our technicians treat nests with protective gear, and plan visits check the outbuildings too.
