Spiders are beneficial and kill most insects that enter your home. However, many people still don’t want spiders in their homes. In fact, spiders are one of the most feared pests.
Why Do I Have Spiders?
It’s a common misconception that spiders invade homes in search of warm shelter. But in fact, spiders are considered cold-blooded and aren’t attracted to heat. They have a substance in their body that acts as an “antifreeze”, so they can easily survive temperatures as low as -5° C. During winter they just become less active.
So if you’re wondering why you have spiders in your home, it’s most likely because their prey is in your home.
How to Keep Spiders Away
- Exclusion: exclusion is a fancy term that simply means putting up barriers to keep pests out. This can be applying caulk around windows and other cracks in your home. It can also mean replacing window and door screens. Remember, spiders can fit through the smallest of cracks, so keep that in mind when sealing entry points around your home.
- Remove debris: spiders like cool, dark places where they will be undisturbed so they’re often attracted to woodpiles, rock piles, other debris. Clean up any debris you have to make your property less inviting to spiders.
- Prune shrubs: spiders are also attracted to plants and shrubs. Make sure your shrubs and plants are pruned so that they don’t touch your home or plant them further away from your home.
- Avoid clutter: spiders are attracted to clutter which is why you commonly see spiders in attics and basements. Store your belongings in plastic bins with airtight lids and arrange them in an organized fashion.
